EHDanson was retained to assist with the design of a new accessible entry into the existing historic downtown Montpelier facility. The original building was constructed for an insurance company and included a large open courtyard. The courtyard had long since been converted to a parking area for employees; the weight of which overwhelmed the structure of the service tunnel beneath it. As part of the reconstruction of the tunnel and parking area, the two employee entrances were reconstructed to provide covered, ADA compliant access. EHDanson worked with the structural engineer, the state historic commission, and the owner to provide a design that met the needs of all involved. The structure was of particular importance as the capacity of the existing building to support additional weight was limited by its age and construction.
